While hustling through the bustles of your regular nine to fives in the central business district of Singapore, there are several third wave coffee houses you can visit for great coffee and a delightful brunch. By walking a straight line from Tanjong Pagar MRT, a hand full of opportunities lined up along the side-streets await you to taste their perfectly roasted coffee.
6oz Espresso Bar is one of those stops, and has become many contemporary clienteles favourite place to visit while in the area. Opened slightly less than two years ago in Tokio Marine Centre – which won a Green Mark for Buildings Award in BCA Awards 2008 – 6oz Espresso Bar gets the praise for finest standard 6oz (ounce) coffee served in traditional European artisan coffee house.
Greeted with an open door concept and high ceiling that flood the space with natural light, we instantly felt welcomed and at home.
Shane and Diana, the cafe’s young but humble owners, then very intricately crafted the finest Cappuccino ($4.80), Roasted Almond Latte ($5.50), Cafe Mocha ($5.50) and Iced Chocolate ($4.80) complete with beautiful latte art for us to try. The medium bodied coffee used in their drinks has a balanced and smooth caramelly richness to it, that leaves a clean and crisp aftertaste – perfect and just to our likings.
Immensely knowledgeable and passionate for the coffee industry, Shane would, on a daily basis, prepare coffee alongside his highly trained baristas to deliver serious coffee drinks that is complimented by a list of over-the-bar menu items. The coffee used is a balanced blend of four distinct origins that include Brazil, Sumatra, Ethiopia and Costa Rica. Made with 100% Arabica beans that are roasted weekly and bought in small vacuum packed batches, the coffee professional ensures freshness and quality are not compromised.
The cafe bar may specialize in coffee, but Diana gives equal or even higher attention to the food 6oz serves as well.
For the record, no other cafe along McCallum Street serves all day breakfast. So, count yourself lucky to have beautifully shaped and perfectly poached runny Eggs Benedict with Sauteed Mushroom (Double $8.00/Single $6.00) at reach if you work around the area. Yes ladies, you saw it right. Single portions are available for the petites – so, there is no excuse for you not to try it now.
A sweet twist to the sugar coated Cinnamon Pretzel ($4.20) left us in awe for its perfectly soft texture and tasteful cinnamon notes at every bite. Served warm with a generous helping of ham and thick slice of emmental cheese, the deliciously light and fluffy Ham and Cheese Croissant ($4.70) was no doubt our most favourite food for the day.
We finally ended the session with one of 6oz’s better selling desserts, the Affogato ($5.40), which cups a brilliant mix of real vanilla bean ice cream and espresso shot, sure to leave anyone asking for more. The coffee house also serves other variants of tantalizing homemade gourmet sandwiches, hearty breakfast sets, pastries, desserts and cakes.
6oz Espresso Bar has been involved in corporate events and functions across Singapore through their new Mobile Coffee service. The service extends beyond just catering, by offering barista(s) assistance and ensuring your guests have a true cafe experience throughout the event. 6oz Espresso Bar also hopes to begin cafe operation on weekends in the near future, to cater to a wider spectrum of executives and tourists crowds.
