Batter is the perfect way to turn bad days into better ones. This relatively new crispy crepe shop is located near Kent Ridge MRT and within easy reach of the National University Hospital. Students, office workers, doctors, and even patients – I read one of them sneaked out of his ward – flock in at meal times for a Batter alternative. That includes a selection of sweet and savoury crispy crepes with top international brands of ingredients like Nutella, Hersheys and Post Cereals. Since Batter directly imports its ingredients from the suppliers, it is also able to charge at affordable prices. Fun-looking with inviting colours and welcoming staff, you will surely to enjoy the whole Batter experience.
From a distance, the smell of warm and freshly made crepes already tickled our senses. Sean, one of two partners who operates the shop, picked out three popular crepe flavours for us to try. Despite having arrived in the middle of the rush, our wait for the crepes was surprisingly short.
Unlike traditional soft crepes, Batter crepes are made slightly crispy as Singaporeans tend to prefer food with well-defined textures. Nutella & Banana is a classic combination of fresh fruity and gooey chocolatey goodness. For a more unique taste, try Apple Crumble, a medley of sweet Batter chunky apple jam, digestive crumbs and salted caramel sauce. Wrapped up in such a fashion that we could walk around and eat, we found ourselves throwing away the idea of eating daintily and started chomping down.
More popular at lunch hour is Lunch Munch, generously filled with egg, nacho cheese, pan roasted potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, chicken ham, caramelised onions and sauteed wild mushrooms. Despite the combination of crunchy and juicy ingredients wrapped up in thin crispy crepe, Lunch Munch did not break apart. Instead, it managed to create a certain Q-ness in that it became slightly chewy, but still crisp at the right edges.
Other fillings on the menu that might interest you include lemon curd, durian, old school ice cream, Batter chicken mayo and smoked salmon. Sean also shared that Batter would be introducing a new Oreo S’mores flavour in the month to come. We’re definitely keeping a look out on that one! So if you are in the locale, or traveling on the Circle Line for matter of fact, take it from us and pop by to order a Batter crepe. You will not be disappointed, and might just beg to return for more!
