Most Japanese restaurants in Singapore alter their recipes to suit the local preferences, compromising the true taste and texture of Japanese food. Fortunately, Wa-Cafe is focused on retaining the authenticity of Japanese cuisine! The last time we came, we were impressed with its Tea Time Menu, so we had every reason to look forward to their Lunch/Dinner Menu. Wa-Cafe charges its food at nett prices, provides FREE WiFi and charging port at most tables, so you can have short meetings with colleagues or relax with your digital device in a comfortable and convenient cafe setting. The fact that the cafe is frequented by Japanese tourists, expatriates and office workers is also proof of its excellent food and service quality.

Omu Rice is a fried rice dish wrapped inside an omelette pouch, topped with homemade sauce. Using only pasteurised egg, the omelette pouch was perfectly cooked in that although it was crepe-like thin, slightly soft and runny, it did not break apart when filled with fried rice. The rice had a natural sweetness, the chicken breast meat marinated with rich beef sauce and red wine was tender and flavoursome. This was truly one of the highlights for the evening.

Should you prefer a seafood alternative, try Salmon Rice with cheese baked to creamy and crisp perfection. Particularly impressive was that the melted cheese separated easily from the plate, indicating that it was thoroughly baked and not burnt. The dish also brimmed with generous portion of salmon, but was surprisingly light on stomach as a whole.

Japanese love their noodles slightly chewy – this trait is observed in their udon and spaghetti dishes. In fact, the more chewy the noodle, the fresher it is. Spaghetti with Wa-Fu Veg was well tossed with crunchy greens and tender meat pieces. For a seafood alternative, try Spaghetti with Cod Roe. It’s fragrant, slightly creamy and excites your taste buds with tiny bursts of fresh cod roe.

For something more Western-inspired, try Hamburger Steak with onion garlic vinegar sauce. It’s a wonderful choice of piquant sauce, strong enough to bring out the natural sweetness of the beef and pork patty, and mild enough not to overpower the taste of fresh mushroom, tamago and rice. We think anyone will love this, especially the kids!
