Ciel, pronounced as see-el, means sky or heaven in French. Situated in Hougang, the main heartland in Singapore, Ciel Patisserie was established with the intent to let everyone have a slice of heaven on this tiny red dot of an island. The cafe prides itself in using only the finest and freshest quality ingredients, making gorgeous and great tasting bakes accessible and affordable to all who are not in Orchard. Small and snug, the cafe also makes an ideal place for unwinding or small gathering with friends.

We’ve had our share of awfully sour lemon meringue tarts. Fortunately, Ciel Patisserie’s Lemon Meringue Tart ($4.20) had just the right balance of sweet and sour notes. The natural scent of fresh lemon worked well with the generous topping of smooth meringue, which added a creamy texture to a crusty tart base. If you’re still not a fan of sourish pastry, you can choose from a selection of fruity pastries.

Chocolate lovers can find delight in the Bombe ($5.80). It’s content was not explosive, but very comforting. Beneath the hard-shelled chocolate was a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate mousse cake atop a crisp hazelnut feuilletine, or waffle biscuit base. That’s no all, the mousse cake had an infusion of fresh blueberries. Can you imagine the combination of rich chocolatey and fruity flavours – it’s The Bomb!

More popular among its patrons is Ceil Patisserie’s signature Strawberry Shortcake ($5.60). It’s a light and pillowy soft sponge cake with multi-layers of chopped fresh strawberries. This one’s served in a big slice too, so it’s valuable for your money.

Pairing cakes, tarts and pastries with the right tea can enhance your cafe experience. If you’re seeking tea with natural sweetness and fruity flavours, try African Sunrise ($2.60). It’s an organic rooibos tea with blackcurrants, blackberry leaves, rose and mullein flowers, and strawberry pieces. If you’re seeking tea with natural floral flavours, try Sakura ($2.60). It’s a green sencha tea with jasmine, peonies and rose flowers, rose hip skin, and cherry pieces.
