Traditionally, Chinese New Year symbolizes a new 365 days on the lunar calendar and is the biggest affair for most Chinese across the globe. But, really, it’s all about members of the family coming together for loads of good food (and ang baos, of course).
So where do good food comes in throughout the 15 days of celebration? Fundamentally, most families gather on Chinese New Year’s Eve for their reunion dinner. But as modernity perpetuates Singapore’s society, lesser and lesser families prefer to cook reunion feast at home. Appertaining to that, restaurants and hotels go all out to create a festive F&B phenomena for the general public. Then again, comes an unworded conundrum—which restaurant/hotel should you choose for your reunion dinner?
To end up at the top of minds, Michelin Bib Gourmand-crowned culinary team of Peony Jade led by executive chef, Ricky Liew, and Lee Hee Min serves up a luxurious rooster-themed feast in the year of Rooster. Here’s a few masterpieces Peony Jade has to offer to start off your CNY right.
Headlining the festive menu is their yusheng for the season—lobster sashimi, Canada conch, Norwegian salmon slices and poached Australian two-head golden abalone, on top of julienned vegetables and mandarin orange then scented with truffle and dusted with gold. Priced at S$268.88, this gluten-free yusheng serves up to 10 – 12 guests, and is available for dine-in only at Peony Jade @ Clarke Quay. 1-day advance order is required.
Peony Jade Keppel Club rendition of Instant Enormous Windfall, Good Health and Longevity” Rooster-shaped Yu Sheng features also lobster from Canada, sliced premium two-head golden abalone from Australia, sliced Conch, Norwegian salmon (sashimi-grade) etc. and edible 18k gold leaves. Priced at $268.88, this gluten free yusheng serves up to 10-12 guests, and is available for dine-in only at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club. 1-day advance order is required.
Oxford Dictionary should probably amend the definition of ‘lavish’. Whole pork knuckle, roasted goose, golden dried oysters, sea cucumbers, pork tendons, fresh whole scallops, fish maw, king-sized prawns, whole abalones etc. were blanketed under a thick, rich broth. Priced at $468.88 for the Mini Premium Pot Package (serves 6 guests), and $698.88 for the Premium Pot Package (serves 8-10 guests). All order of this particular poon choi comes with 5 complimentary items: Prosperity Yu Sheng, Black Truffle Bird’s Nest Fish Maw Soup, Poached Rich Soya Sauce Chicken, Claypot Jasmine rice with Chinese Sausages and Chilled Cream Golden Pumpkin with Sago Pearls.
A fresh take on chicken cuisine to meet the theme of the year and to represent future successes in all continents, each skewer simply consists of baked juicy bite-sized chicken pieces and not-so-bite-sized whole 8-head abalone. Priced at $38.88 per guest with a minimum order for 4 guests, the skewer dish is available for dine-in only at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.
The must-have Ong Lai (homophones in Hokkien dialect referring to ‘come, fortune’) owns its place in the menu when chef Liew filled the hollowed baby pineapples with truffle-scented minced salmon, cod fish dace and chestnuts. Comes with the chef’s homemade rojak sauce, but a kind reminder to hold it if you can’t take heat. Priced at $38.88 per guest with a minimum order for 4 guests. Available for dine-in only at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.
The avocado wraps present a uniquely savoury-light yet creamy-rich combination of fresh blue swimmer crabmeat with Boston lobster meat, minced water-chestnuts and Chinese truffles enveloped with layers of avocado. Priced at $168.88, the dish serves up to 6 guests. Available for dine-in only, at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.
Probably because of how humble this look, this took us by surprise. Fresh red grouper slices lightly cooked in a splendid gelatin-rich broth. Priced at $18.88 per 100gram. Available for dine-in only at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club.
The Peony Jade signature does not disappoint. Literally a durian and nian gao sandwich, durian lovers can’t stop at one piece. Priced at $98.88, serves up to 8-10 guests, and is available for dine-in and takeaway at both branches and Takashimaya Basement 2.
This artisan creation showcases layers of coconut cream and durian rolls shaped into Mahjong tiles marked with Chinese characters stating the four directions and great prosperities framing a non-adulterated premium Organic Black Gold Mao Shan Wang Durian Nian Gao (glutinous rice cake). Sweet ending with this Premium Organic Black Gold Mao Shan Wang Durian layered between thin yet chewy Nian Gao. Priced at $118.88, the dish serves up to 8-10 guests, and is available for dine-in and takeaway at both branches and Takashimaya Basement 2.
