Deep within Pasir Panjang area near the prestige National University of Singapore lies one of the city’s best kept secret, Hidden Yard. Ayam penyet, nasi lemak – if you’re a Singaporean, these are dishes that wouldn’t sound strange to you. Hidden Yard, a sizable and spacious eatery with white-washed walls adorned with a number of traditional paintings, serves a variety of Indonesian cuisine at an affordable price through the hands of old aunties who made Michelin star chefs pale in comparison.
Literally ‘smashed chicken’, this dish that originated from Indonesian, is the meat is marinated with herbs and spices and then smashed with a hammer, followed by deep-frying. With so many places for ayam penyet in town, Hidden Yard distinguished its version with juicier meat and a flavorful batter. Other than a considerable large portion of chicken that’s crispy but not oily, the Ayam Penyet Set comes with fried tempeh (fermented soybean cake), fried beancurd, crunchy and airy bread crumbs, handmade chilli paste, and rice. They also serve Ikan Penyet, Sotong Penyet and Udang Penyet if chicken is not your first of choice, but we’re pretty sure it will be once you get a taste of it.
What differs Hidden Yard’s satay is the peanut sauce that accompanies these meat sticks. More watery and with tiny peanut bits floating in it, the sauce complements the taste of the satay rather than overpowering them.
The plate of Crispy Chicken Wing Nasi Lemak Set is loaded with side dishes – a full Crispy Chicken Wing, Fried Kuning Fish, fried beancurd, Fish Cake, Peanut & Ikan Bilis and impressive chilli sambal. Oh, not to forget the amazingly fragrant steamed coconut rice. You can choose your own side orders such as Chicken Rendang where the meat just peel off the bones in a light touch, or their big chunk of entirely handmade Fish Otak.
When you need something to wash down the flavors in your mouth, it is wise to choose the tangy Fresh Calamansi Juice to neutralize the spiciness and saltiness from this meal.
For a no-fuss eatery that provides value-for-money cuisine, Hidden Yard sure makes the top of the list. In addition, no service and gst charges for your meal. Not only are the food commendable, but they also treat their patrons well. When you like them on their Facebook, just flash them the news and you can get a scoop of free handmade Gelato.
