Why stick to traditional Chinese clay pot when you can have modern fusion stone grill food? Unlike clay pots, stone grills uses a heat retaining stone bowl lightly glazed with oil to create dishes that are healthy, evenly-heated and clean to taste. The result is loose, crisp rice that remains hot to the last spoon, and can be cleaned off the wall of the bowl unburnt.
We started off with an Asian flavour, Assorted Sausage & Wax Pork atop aromatic rice, garnished with finely chopped shallots. On our own, we could drizzle the dish with dark soy sauce to our preference, but the staff who attended to us was kind enough to help us mix it. She gently folded in the rice, section by section, evenly distributing the heat so that every grain of rice achieves the same crisp texture. Combined with savoury ingredients, and home made belachan chilli, the dish was really tasty and enjoyable.
For a Western flavour, try the Ham & Cheese Rice. It is coated with a thick cheesy layer of melted cheese, closely resembling your regular baked rice. The gooey grilled cheese holds the crisp rice so firmly together, you can feel a burst of textures and rich flavours that are relishable.
However, the stone grill rice does not come fast or easy. Prepared upon order, each dish takes about 15 minutes to arrive at your table. Signature Stone also cares to use home made rice as it is more fragrant than plain white rice. To keep your hunger at bay, pick out a soup or side dish. We had the Cheese Onion Ham Omelette which is generously stuffed with sliced onions and cubed hams. The egg was soft and fluffy, and the cheese held everything in place. We reckon the kids will love this dish as much as we did.
For soup, try the Logans & Black Bean Soup filled with specially marinated chicken, enoki mushrooms, chopped shallots, tangy and sweet dried longans, black bean and rich broth. This is especially ideal if you are health conscious, as black bean is known to nourish the kidney, enrich blood and provide protein to the skin and hair.
Alternatively, you can try the Chicken with Dan Gui Soup + Porridge double boiled with red dates, wolf berries, and orange zest for a dash of sweetness. Those who are experiencing a weak appetite may find pleasure in the mild tasting soup that is full of nutritional benefits.
Signature Stone also serves up Thai Tom Yam Seafood Soup + Noodle, or chu mi fen. The noodle retains its springy and separable texture through rinsing in cold water after it is cooked. Overall, the dish had more sourness than spice, delivering the authentic taste of Thai tom yum. If you are looking for something bright and appetising, then this soup dish it is.
There is so much more to try at Signature Stone given their wide selection of Asian and Western flavours, as well as side dishes. The stone grill bowls retain heat so well, they make your dining experience all the more enjoyable as your meal remains piping hot, unburnt and well seasoned. On the whole, we thought the restaurant would make a nice place to patronise as its location is just a 5 minutes walk from Tiong Bahru MRT. No need to stress about parking since you can park at the plaza even.
