The story of Nanbantei

Nanbantei is a charcoal yakitori and kushiyaki name that traces back to Roppongi in Tokyo, and its Singapore restaurant has been grilling skewers on the fifth floor of Far East Plaza since 1983. It describes itself as possibly the longest-running yakitori restaurant in Singapore.

  • 1983: Nanbantei opened its first Singapore outlet on the fifth floor of Far East Plaza on Scotts Road.
  • 2003: A UOB dining feature marked the Far East Plaza outlet's roughly 20 years in Singapore, naming Hisaki Deguchi as its owner and noting that a Nanbantei chef from Japan, Fumio Tanaka, was working there.
  • 2016: A second Singapore branch opened at Chinatown Point on New Bridge Road.

Did you know?

  • The Singapore restaurant describes itself as possibly the longest-running and one of the first Japanese yakitori restaurants in Singapore, and it says it uses seasonal ingredients shipped in from Japan.
  • The 2003 feature says the grill uses binchotan white charcoal and Hakata sea salt, with salmon belly, beef tongue and shiso-wrapped pork among the long-standing favourites.
