The story of TungLok Teahouse

TungLok Teahouse is the casual dim sum offshoot of TungLok Group, the Singapore restaurant company that grew out of the Tjioe family's first restaurant in 1980. It started in the Far East Square shophouses in the CBD and today is best known for its Novena outlet at Square 2, where dim sum arrives on automated trays.

  • 1980: The Tjioe family, who had been in the textile trade, moved into food by opening their first restaurant, Charming Garden.
  • 1984: Andrew Tjioe set up TungLok Group and opened its flagship Tung Lok Shark's Fin Restaurant at Liang Court.
  • 2001: The family-owned group went public on the Singapore Exchange.
  • 2013: TungLok Teahouse opened at Far East Square on Amoy Street, serving all-day dim sum and Teochew dishes in a retro, Peranakan-styled teahouse setting.
  • 2015: Building on the Far East Square outlet, the brand opened a second, similar teahouse at Square 2 in Novena.
  • 2016: The Square 2 outlet was revamped around an automated tray system that sends dim sum from the kitchen to the table, a first for a Chinese restaurant according to the brand.
  • 2025: The Novena outlet brought back a weekday dim sum high tea buffet.

Did you know?

  • TungLok Teahouse belongs to TungLok Group, whose listed parent is Tung Lok Restaurants (2000) Ltd on the Singapore Exchange.
  • The brand's official site says it was the first Chinese restaurant to introduce automated tray delivery, which sends dim sum and other dishes along tracks to diners at Square 2.
  • The group's founding family came from the textile business: Andrew Tjioe's father ran a textile firm before opening Charming Garden, where Andrew learned restaurant management after studying in the US.
  • The official site positions the teahouse as a nostalgic family gathering place serving handmade dim sum steamed to order alongside Cantonese classics.
