Best Hawker Centres in Singapore: 13 Best Spots (2026)

The best hawker centres in Singapore include Old Airport Road, Maxwell, Chinatown Complex, Amoy Street, Hong Lim and Tiong Bahru Market, each with several stalls in the Michelin Guide Singapore 2026 Bib Gourmand list. Hawker centres are open-air complexes of independent stalls serving affordable local dishes, a culture inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2020. Most dishes cost from around $3 to $8, with BBQ seafood centres such as Newton, East Coast Lagoon and Lau Pa Sat costing more, and the densest cluster is in Chinatown and the CBD. Bring cash or a PayNow-ready phone, avoid the 12pm to 2pm rush, and check NEA's cleaning-closure dates before a special trip.

Last verified: October 2026. Hours and prices can change — we re-check our guides regularly, but do confirm before a special trip.

Your questions answered

What is the best hawker centre in Singapore?

Old Airport Road Food Centre and Maxwell Food Centre are the most often recommended. Old Airport Road has three 2026 Bib Gourmand stalls (Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee, Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow and To-Ricos Kway Chap), while Maxwell is central and home to Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. Hong Lim, Amoy Street and Tiong Bahru Market also have several Bib Gourmand stalls.

How much does a meal at a hawker centre cost?

Most hawker dishes cost from around $3 to $8, so a meal with a drink is often under $10 per person. BBQ seafood at Newton, East Coast Lagoon and Lau Pa Sat is priced by weight at market rates, so confirm the price before ordering.

Are hawker centres in Singapore halal?

Halal status is decided stall by stall, not for the whole centre. Adam Road Food Centre, Tekka Centre and Changi Village Hawker Centre have many Malay-Muslim or Indian-Muslim stalls, while mixed centres also have stalls selling pork. Look for a MUIS halal certificate at the stall or check the MUIS halal directory.

What are hawker centre opening hours?

Hawker centres generally open from early morning to late evening, but each stall sets its own hours and rest days, and many popular stalls sell out by early afternoon. Chomp Chomp and Newton are busiest in the evening. NEA closes each centre for cleaning a few days every quarter, for example Old Airport Road from 7 to 10 December 2026, so check the NEA schedule before visiting.

Which area has the best hawker centres?

Chinatown and the CBD have the densest cluster: Maxwell, Chinatown Complex, Hong Lim, Amoy Street and Lau Pa Sat are all within walking distance of each other. Outside the centre, try Old Airport Road in the east, Tiong Bahru and Alexandra Village in the south-west, Ghim Moh in the west, Chomp Chomp in Serangoon Gardens and Changi Village in the north-east.

Do I need to book at a hawker centre, and do stalls take cards?

Hawker centres do not take bookings. Seating is first come, first served, and locals often 'chope' (reserve) a seat with a packet of tissues. Many stalls accept the SGQR scan-and-pay code, but some are still cash only, so carry cash.
