The story of Carousel

Carousel is the lobby-level international buffet restaurant of Royal Plaza on Scotts, an independent hotel on Scotts Road that first opened as a Holiday Inn in 1974. The restaurant took over from the hotel's earlier Cafe Vienna in the 2000s and has become one of Orchard's best-known halal-certified hotel buffets.

  • 1974: The building that now houses Carousel opened as the Holiday Inn on Scotts Road, owned by hotelier Khoo Teck Puat.
  • 1999: After several renames and upgrades under Brunei-linked ownership, the hotel took its current name, Royal Plaza on Scotts.
  • 2000s: Carousel opened as the hotel's buffet restaurant, replacing the earlier Cafe Vienna in the same role; it celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017.
  • 2012: Under culinary executive chef Abraham Tan, Carousel was named Best Buffet Restaurant in the AsiaOne People's Choice Awards 2011/12, its third win in a row.
  • 2017: To mark its 10th anniversary, Carousel held a pay-as-you-wish buffet lunch and served a 10kg celebration cake made by its chefs.
  • 2019: As part of the hotel's wider makeover, Carousel was refreshed with new sections including a Brazilian churrasco station, an Asian hotplate serving local dishes, and shophouse-motif windows.
  • 2020: During pandemic dining rules, Carousel reopened on 12 November 2020 with an à la carte buffet served at the table and launched island-wide delivery.
  • 2021: Self-service buffet lines returned on 12 April 2021, with partitions, sneeze guards and one masked server at each line.
  • 2024: Carousel received two HalalTrip Gastronomy Awards, Best Hotel Restaurant or Café and a Diamond Award, as well as Best Muslim-Friendly Restaurant at the Chope Diners' Choice Awards.
