The story of Eighteen Chefs
Eighteen Chefs is a Singapore chain serving affordable Western food, best known for its customisable cheese baked rice. It began in 2007 as a social enterprise led by ex-offender turned chef Benny Se Teo, who set out to give former offenders and at-risk youths a career in the kitchen.
- 2006: Benny Se Teo did an internship at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen in London, a restaurant that trains disadvantaged young people.
- 2007: Back in Singapore, Se Teo and two partners opened the first Eighteen Chefs.
- 2012: Eighteen Chefs was named Social Enterprise of the Year under the President's Challenge.
- 2014: The BBC profiled the chain, noting that nearly half its staff had troubled pasts.
- 2021: Benny Se Teo retired, and the chain carried on without him.
Did you know?
- The name has nothing to do with the number of cooks: Se Teo took 'Eighteen' from the gang his late father belonged to.
- Cheese baked rice is its best-known dish, and diners build their own from a choice of sauces and toppings.
