The story of Kinki
Kinki is a home-grown Singapore concept, not an import from Japan: it opened in the early 2010s on the waterfront at Customs House, Collyer Quay, with modern Japanese food in a restaurant below and a graffiti-covered rooftop bar above looking out over Marina Bay. It is now part of Commonwealth Concepts, a local F&B group, and has added a sister bistro in Holland Village.
- 2010s: Kinki Restaurant + Bar opened at Customs House on Collyer Quay, a conserved 1960s building once used by the Singapore Customs Police; most sources give 2010.
- 2021: Commonwealth Capital and Refinery Concepts, the F&B arm of Far East Organization, launched Commonwealth Concepts as a joint venture, and Kinki is now listed among its brands.
- 2021: After about ten years, Kinki relaunched with a renovated space and a new menu, and replaced its sumo wrestler mascot with a geisha.
- 2023: The Kinki team opened Ginkyō by Kinki, a modern Japanese bistro at One Holland Village based on Tokyo's ginkgo festival.
Did you know?
- Kinki's official website describes it as a brand of Commonwealth Concepts, the group that also runs the TriplePlus rewards programme.
- Kinki uses two levels of Customs House: a modern Japanese restaurant on the second floor and an open-air rooftop bar on the third, where graffiti by Singapore artist ANTZ (Anthony Chong) covers the walls.
- Since the 2021 relaunch, a geisha has been the brand's muse, appearing in the murals and in some cocktail names, including a rooftop piece that shows her wearing a kitsune fox mask.
