The story of Swee Choon

Swee Choon is a family-run dim sum house that began on Jalan Besar in 1962 and became famous as a late-night supper spot. Now led by its third generation, it has grown beyond its shophouse flagship while keeping its dim sum handmade.

  • 1962: Ting Ah Swee and his wife started the dim sum business that became Swee Choon.
  • 1976: Their eldest daughter Joyce and eldest son Tony joined as the second generation.
  • 2007: Shanghai-style dim sum joined the Cantonese menu.
  • 2012: The restaurant began serving zi char dishes too.
  • 2020: Swee Choon opened a cloud kitchen in Tampines, its first venture beyond Jalan Besar.
  • 2021: A Century Square outlet in Tampines opened, its first dine-in shop in a mall.
  • 2026: The Jalan Besar flagship began opening seven days a week.

Did you know?

  • Three generations of the Ting family have run Swee Choon; grandson Ernest Ting joined in 2020.
  • The Jalan Besar flagship grew from one shophouse unit into six connected units.
  • The family still makes its dim sum by hand rather than by machine.
  • Swee Choon is on the National Heritage Board's SG Heritage Business Registry.
