The story of Watami
Watami began as one young entrepreneur's franchised izakaya in Yokohama and became one of Japan's best-known casual dining groups, pitching its restaurants as a relaxed, family-friendly take on the Japanese pub. In Singapore it has run its own local company since 2008 and opened its first restaurant at ION Orchard in 2009.
- 1984: Founder Miki Watanabe set up a small company in Yokohama and began running izakaya as a franchisee of the Tsubohachi chain.
- 1986: Watanabe incorporated Watami Co., Ltd., which took over the earlier company's restaurants the following year.
- 1992: The first restaurant under Watami's own izakaya brand opened in Sasazuka, Tokyo, and the group began converting its Tsubohachi franchise outlets to the Watami name.
- 2001: Watami went overseas for the first time with a restaurant on Humphreys Avenue in Hong Kong.
- 2008: The group set up its Singapore subsidiary, Watami Food Service Singapore Pte. Ltd.
- 2009: Watami's first Singapore restaurant opened at ION Orchard.
Did you know?
- Watami started trading over the counter in Japan in 1996, moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998 and is now listed on its Prime Market.
- The original Watami concept was billed as an 'izakaya-style dining room' meant to feel like another family dinner table rather than a drinking pub.
- Before Singapore, Watami had already expanded abroad to Hong Kong in 2001 and Taiwan in 2005.
