The story of Social Place
Social Place is a casual, contemporary Chinese dining concept created in Hong Kong in 2014 by the listed Tang Palace restaurant group, known for playful, photogenic dim sum alongside reworked Cantonese and northern Chinese classics. It reached Singapore in 2019 through a three-way regional partnership, opening its first Southeast Asian restaurant at Forum The Shopping Mall on Orchard Road.
- 2014: Tang Palace (China) Holdings officially launched Social Place on 16 October 2014 with a roughly 150-seat restaurant on Queen's Road Central, pitched as a modern, MSG-free casual Chinese dining brand.
- 2018: The brand entered Taiwan as 唐點小聚 under a partnership between Tang Palace and Taiwanese restaurant group Shin Yeh.
- 2019: Social Place opened its first Singapore and first Southeast Asian outlet at Forum The Shopping Mall on Orchard Road, run as a joint venture between Tang Palace, Singapore's Palm Beach Seafood and Indonesia's Gaia Culinary Concepts.
- 2025: Shin Yeh announced it would wind down Social Place in Taiwan, closing its Taipei and Hsinchu restaurants at the end of February and start of March 2025.
Did you know?
- Social Place was not started by an individual founder but developed in-house by Tang Palace (China) Holdings, a multi-brand Chinese restaurant group that in 2014 had over two decades of history in Mainland China; chairman Yip Shu-ming launched it to build the group's profile in Hong Kong.
- From launch the concept was framed around healthier modern Chinese cooking, with no MSG, and drew on parent Tang Palace's signature roast pigeon.
- The Singapore restaurant was the first in the chain to get a glossy wall built from mahjong tiles, mixing modern styling with old Hong Kong touches like patterned flooring.
- The Singapore venture brought together F&B businesses from three markets: Tang Palace from Hong Kong, Palm Beach Seafood from Singapore and Gaia Culinary Concepts from Indonesia.
