Best Stalls at Chinatown Food Street Smith Street: 17 Best Spots (2026)

Singapore's original Chinatown Food Street — the Singapore Tourism Board's air-cooled, al-fresco pushcart stretch along Smith Street, run latterly by Select Group — shut for good on 22 October 2021 after 20 years, a casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Today the real feast on Smith Street lives inside Chinatown Complex Food Centre (335 Smith Street), Singapore's largest hawker centre with over 260 stalls and several Michelin-listed hawkers, from Lian He Ben Ji's charcoal claypot rice to the legendary Liao Fan soya sauce chicken. Many stalls open early and sell out by early afternoon and hours are irregular, so go early on a weekday and confirm opening times before you travel.

Your questions answered
Is Chinatown Food Street on Smith Street still open?
The Singapore Tourism Board's branded, air-cooled Chinatown Food Street (opened 2001) closed permanently on 22 October 2021 after 20 years, hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. But Smith Street remains a food destination: Chinatown Complex Food Centre at 335 Smith Street houses over 260 hawker stalls, including Michelin-listed ones.
Which Smith Street stalls have Michelin recognition?
Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand; Liao Fan (Hawker Chan) soya sauce chicken rice held a Michelin star from 2016 to 2020 and has since been Bib Gourmand-listed; Zhong Guo La Mian Xiao Long Bao is Michelin-recommended. Recognition can change year to year, so check the current Michelin Guide.
How much does a meal cost at Chinatown Complex Food Centre?
It's cheap. Most hawker mains run S$3.50 to S$8 (e.g. chicken rice from S$3.80, popiah S$2.20, chendol S$2.80), and claypot rice starts around S$8 for a shared pot. Many stalls are cash-only, so bring small notes.
Are there halal or vegetarian options on Smith Street?
Options are limited. Aziz Jaffar Muslim Food (#02-070) is halal-certified Malay food. Most other stalls are Chinese and serve pork; a few, such as the popiah and chendol stalls, use no pork or lard but are not halal-certified, so check directly with the stall. There are also dedicated vegetarian stalls within the complex.
What are the best times to go, and do I need to queue?
Go early on a weekday. Many stalls open at dawn and sell out by early to mid-afternoon (some breakfast stalls close by noon), while claypot rice is cooked to order with 30-45 minute waits at dinner. There are no reservations, opening days are irregular, and stalls take rest days, so always confirm hours before you travel.
