Cheap Eats in Bukit Merah: 16 Best Spots (2026)

Bukit Merah is one of Singapore's richest heartland hawker districts, anchored by two beloved food centres: the recently revamped ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre on Jalan Bukit Merah and Alexandra Village Food Centre (reopened mid-2025 after renovation). Between them you can eat extremely well for under S$10 — Michelin-listed char siew, claypot laksa, herbal soups, wanton mee and roast meats. Note that neither food centre sits directly next to an MRT station, and many stalls take cash only and close one or two days a week, so plan around opening days and bring small notes.

Last verified: September 2026. Hours and prices can change — we re-check our guides regularly, but do confirm before a special trip.

Your questions answered

Which MRT station is closest to Bukit Merah's cheap eats?

Neither ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre (6 Jalan Bukit Merah) nor Alexandra Village Food Centre (120 Bukit Merah Lane 1) sits right next to an MRT. Redhill (EW18) is the nearest station to both, roughly a 15-20 minute walk, and Alexandra Village is also close to Labrador Park (CC27). Many locals arrive by bus, so check bus routes if you prefer not to walk.

How cheap are cheap eats in Bukit Merah?

Most single dishes here run about S$3.50-8. You can get chicken rice or wanton mee from around S$3.50, char siew rice from about S$4.50, laksa and Penang dishes around S$5-6, and desserts from S$2.50. A filling meal comfortably stays under S$10.

Are there halal options among these stalls?

Halal choices are limited. Most stalls listed here are Chinese hawker stalls that serve pork and are not halal. Indian-Muslim stalls such as Sheikh Indian and Pakistani Food (and others in the centre) are the more likely Muslim-friendly options, but we could not verify MUIS certification, so confirm halal status directly with the stall before ordering.

What are the best times to visit, and do stalls close on certain days?

Many stalls close one or two days a week and some sell out early, so check the individual hours above. Popular options like Fatty Cheong (closed Thursdays) and the fish soup and satay stalls have limited windows. Go slightly before lunch or dinner peak to avoid queues, and avoid Mondays when several stalls rest.

Do the stalls take cashless payment?

It varies. Some stalls, such as Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle, are cash only, and older hawkers may not accept cards or e-payment reliably. Bring small notes and coins to be safe, even though many stalls now offer PayNow or similar.
