The story of Morton's The Steakhouse
Morton's began as a single Chicago steakhouse in 1978, built on a friendship that started with a hamburger at a Montreal Playboy Club. Twenty years later Singapore became the chain's first restaurant outside the US, at Mandarin Oriental, where it reopened after the hotel's 2023 renovation.
- 1978: Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch opened the first Morton's in Chicago's Newberry Plaza on the Gold Coast, and it became the model for the chain.
- 1998: Morton's opened inside Mandarin Oriental Singapore, its first restaurant outside the United States.
- 2006: Morton's Restaurant Group went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MRT.
- 2012: A company owned by Tilman Fertitta and affiliated with Landry's completed its tender offer for Morton's shares at US$6.90 each, taking the chain private under Landry's.
- 2023: The Singapore restaurant closed temporarily while Mandarin Oriental Singapore underwent a hotel-wide renovation.
- 2023: After about seven months, Morton's Singapore reopened on the hotel's third storey with new cocktails and dishes added to the menu.
- 2026: The Singapore outlet's wine list carries a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2026, according to the brand's own location page.

- Fritsch has said the first Chicago restaurant struggled until Frank Sinatra dropped in after a concert, and the press coverage that followed made it a hit.
- Morton's is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Tilman Fertitta's Landry's group, which runs the Singapore restaurant.
